My name is Taliesin.
I’ve been learning how to build furniture out of wood for a few years now. I started Hungry Woodworker in 2022, making commissions, selling small items online and in local stores, and writing about the journey of becoming a woodworker and artisan.
You can read my essays, buy items from my latest collections, or reach out to talk about a commission. I look forward to hearing from you!
What is Hungry Woodworker?
A work in progress.
A small custom-design furniture build shop.
An amateur woodworker learning the trade.
I design and build heirloom-quality wood furniture and decor. All of the furniture is built on commission. With the leftover scraps (or other discarded pieces of wood I find around the shop), I try to make other useful household items.
Alongside this, I write about my experiences as an amateur woodworker learning the skills needed for this work. The writing helps me make sense of the deeper why and meaning that guides my work. It also helps me capture moments of time spent with my dad, who is my main teacher. He’s the reason I can build such high-quality furniture. Writing is my way of giving credit where it’s due.
Why “Hungry Woodworker”?
The name, like a tree, has many roots. On the most primal level, it comes from the time when I didn’t have much food and was hungry. Though it was long ago, that time still feels present.
I am also hungry to learn, to grow, to explore. To matter and to do work that matters and brings joy into other people’s lives. I’m hungry for points of brightness in this world, which can too often feel scary or hopeless.
And finally, back to eating (because it is still present)—I love food, the way it nourishes, brings people together, comforts and connects. I hope in some small way to contribute similarly with my woodworking and writing.
